Preparation of dioxin contamination clean-up in Spolana is culminating

17-02-2006

After obtaining the conclusions of a pilot test of dioxin clean-up in Spolana in 2003, a clean-up preparation consisting in obtaining necessary documents was started.

Neratovice citizens and representatives of Greenpeace and Arnika environmental initiatives, who came to a meeting on January 12, 2005 in the culture house where clean-up environmental impacts (EIA study) were publicly discussed, were informed about technical context of the clean-up of dioxin-contaminated buildings. On 18 July, 2005 SITA CZ obtained the last document – construction permit issued by the Municipal Office in Neratovice and immediately started the construction of processing halls.

On 24 January 2006 Prime Minister Jiří Paroubek, Governor of Central Bohemia Region Petr Bendl and tens of other visitors were informed about the progress of work.

Let´s remind that the "Spolana Dioxiny" project is the largest project of its kind worldwide and prominent world experts and laboratories specialized in this field have participated in it since 2002. The project has been managed by SITA CZ a.s. (former SITA Bohemia a.s.), a daughter company of the French group SUEZ Environment operating in the international environmental field, in co-operation with the company´s technical partner, the company BCD CZ a.s. which is the joint venture of the British technology and project company TCSR and SITA a.s.

Assemblies of technologies and individual construction sets are currently (January-March 2006) in the process of completion. Over 35 000 tons of material (PCDD/F and OCP contaminants) will be processed overall so that the contamination level do not exceed the limits established by the Regional Authority of Central Bohemia (eg 0,2 ng/g of contaminated soil). The clean-up of contaminated buildings is expected to start after the final construction approval (probably in May 2006). According to the agreement with the Czech Environmental Inspection the clean-up work should be completed in December 2008.
